In My Garden

May 24, 2012 by allisonbenotafraid

One year ago, my dad planted flowers in our backyard. Some of them bloomed right away, and like his visit, they brought much-needed beauty into our tumultuous lives. But some of the flowers he planted needed more time. They needed water to fall and sun to shine before they could thrive and grow. Almost overnight, the flowers I’ve been waiting for have bloomed in our yard. There are yellow ones, purple ones, and magnificent ones with orange and ruby swirls […]

A Heart Like Mary

April 6, 2012 by allisonbenotafraid

Last week, John Paul and I enjoyed a perfect spring day. The weather was gorgeous, the flowers were blooming, and John Paul and I were both feeling well. Memories of PET scans, surgeries, needles, PICC lines, NICU stays, and cancer seemed far away. We had a wonderful time playing in the yard, exploring a park nearby, and saying hello to the many neighbors out and about. As I took in the day, I couldn’t help but feel how quickly these […]

This Too Shall Pass: One Year Later

February 17, 2012 by allisonbenotafraid

Doesn’t it sometimes feel like our suffering will go on forever, that the tears we cry will never cease, and the doubts running through our mind will never relent?  Aren’t there times when it seems like we’re fumbling through the darkness, and though we can see a sliver of light, no matter how far we trek and how patiently we press on we can’t seem to reach the end of the tunnel? I’ve felt that way off and on throughout […]

I Am Set Free

January 31, 2012 by allisonbenotafraid

If you’re really lucky, you have a mother who loves you. If you’re truly blessed, you have a mother like mine, who not only loves me, but loves me unconditionally, with a love so blinding (or illuminating, perhaps) that she’s able to willingly pull out the nasty pain catheter sticking out from your side. She sweetly remembers this love even as you’re trying not to swear as she pulls and pulls, and the “black tip” that’s supposed to signify the […]

31 Days of Facing my Fears: Day 3 Keeping a Faithful Heart in Light of Suffering

October 3, 2011 by allisonbenotafraid

“Brothers and sisters: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 This was the reading at mass yesterday, and after hearing it, I knew what I needed to do. Today, as soon as 8 a.m. hit and I knew doctor’s offices would be opened, I called and scheduled […]

Armchair

July 27, 2011 by allisonbenotafraid

When I was a few months pregnant, my in-laws bought Mike and me a wonderfully comfy cream colored armchair.  The idea was that, since it rocked, I would be able to use it once John Paul was born for breastfeeding and putting him to sleep.  Yet, unexpectedly, because of my intense pain and exhaustion, the chair became my almost constant companion even before John Paul was born. The first time I remember feeling pain in my chest was last July, […]

I'm Allison, a stay at home mom to a sweet little boy. I love days with my son, my sweet husband, beating cancer, Blessed JP II, singing at mass, Notre Dame, taking pictures, L'Arche, and white wine. Here's where I write about life. Welcome!
